Get Ready, because Season 7 kicks off this week on PBS stations across Texas. For our premiere episode, we are headed to East Austin to eat some handmade salami and thai food, visit Stephen F. Austin, and do an obstacle course. Let’s hit the road.

Fall Festivals and Pumpkin Patches
Howdy, Daytrippers!
Fall is in the air and with it, shorter days, colder air and the smell of an occasional pumpkin spice latte. All around Texas the leaves are changing, animals migrating and festivals are beginning to pop up. Here at the Daytripper, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to gather a collection of some of the best family friendly festivals and pumpkin patches in the area, beginning with those closest to home.
Austin Area
1. A fan favorite located near Austin is the Barton Hill Farms pumpkin patch and corn maze, located at 1115 Farm to Market 969, Bastrop, Texas 78602. It’s about 25 minutes from Austin but just 10 from Bastrop. The festival includes rides, games, local vendors, a pumpkin patch and a famous corn maze which this year is themed to cheer on the Texas Longhorns. BartonHillFarms.com
Barton Hill Farms is open on weekends only from September 27th to November 9th. Tickets are available online to purchase.
2. Heading in the opposite direction of Bastrop is Sweetberry Farmsnear Marble Falls. This location advertises scarecrow stuffing, horse rides, a corn maze (separate ones for different ages), a pumpkin patch and various other activities showcased on their website: Sweetberryfarm.com . Sweetberry Farms is open every day from September 27th to November 2nd except Wednesdays. They do however offer additional activities on weekends. There is no entrance fee, but a small fee for different activities.
3. In Hays County, the city of Wimberly offers a variety of events on different days located throughout the Halloween season. These include pet parades, pumpkin patches, pumpkin decorating and a safe location for children to go trick or treating among peers. These are available throughout October only and on specific days pre-chosen. Included on the site are a variety of safety tips for parents to help their children get the most out of the Halloween season: VisitWimberley.com/halloween/.
San Antonio Area
1. Pumpkin Hollows Fall Festival, located at 9100 W SI-1604 N, San Antonio, TX 78250. Attractions include a pumpkin patch, fun runs, scavenger hunts, wagon rides and a corn maze depending on what day of attendance. A full calendar is available on their website Home.PumpkinHollow.ca/ . The pinnacle event at the Pumpkin Hollow Festival is a Halloween Extravaganza on October 18th with multiple contests and events for children to partake in and trick or treating available around the location.
2. Located between San Antonio and Austin is the Gruene Pumpkin Patch at 2629 E. Common St, New Braunfels. Though the actual opening date for 2014 is unclear, their Facebook page maintains that the pumpkins have arrived to their intended location. Each Saturday the festival is open will include different activities to be scheduled, not limited to hay rides and pumpkin painting (weather permitting). www.gruenepumpkinpatch.org/.
Dallas Area
1. Storybook Ranch. 3701 Custer Rd., Mckinney, TX 75070. Offers a full fall festival and pumpkin patch. The festival involves a petting zoo, hayrides, and riding lessons. In addition to these activities, there are face painting, bouncy houses, and pony rides available for children. They accommodate for special events as well. This is a charity fundraiser that opens September 19th and closes November 3rd. www.Storybookranch.org
2. Big Orange Pumpkin Farm at 5518 County Road #126, Celina, TX, 75009. Big Orange is open from September 19th to November 2nd, every day, though hours vary throughout the week. It is a highly recommended destination with safe, clean animal pens, food, snacks, picnic areas, a maze, a pumpkin patch and tractor / train rides. It can WAIT!!! Don’t Text and Drive
Howdy, Trippers!
With all of the excitement about Season 6 in the air and everybody looking to hit the road, I wanted to take a moment to remind everyone about some safe driving tips. First and foremost – DON’T TEXT AND DRIVE. It’s not the law all around Texas, but several cities including Austin prohibit the bad habit.
I’m a big supporter of AT&T’s “It Can Wait” campaign and one of 5 million people who have taken the pledge. We all know that there are many things more important than your phone to pay attention to on the road. Besides, if you’re looking down you’ll miss that big beautiful state of Texas that’s right out your window.
So, spend ALL your driving time watching the road. You’ll have more fun in the moment, and be part of saving hundreds of lives a year. Mark your support by using “#X” and let others know you have X’d the Text.
For more information, visit ItCanWait.com.
Safe travels. Vaya con Dios Amigos!
Marble Falls Premiere Party – Oct 9th, 7pm, Uptown Theater
This is going to be awesome. I always love premiering an episode in the featured city and THIS Thursday, October 9th, we will do just that as we premiere our Marble Falls episode at the historic Uptown Theater in downtown Marble Falls. There will be free food, cash bar, and lots of mingling with the crew, along with a pop-up version of The Daytripper General Store.
This event is FREE and open to the public, however seating is limited. So all we ask is that you RSVP with R-Bar and Grill by calling them at 830-693-2622.
Also, we will be accepting donations that night for the Burnet County Santa’s Helpers, so please bring an unwrapped toy and help make someone’s Christmas extra special this year.
I cant wait to see you there. Vaya con Dios!
Thanks To Our Sponsors!
As we kick off Season 6, I wanted to take a moment to THANK our sponsors! We could truly not make this show without your support. Our returning sponsors are The Highland Lakes of Burnet County, Rudy’s Country Store and Bar-B-Q and Subaru. We appreciate your continued support of the show.
Our new sponsors this season are Best Western Hotels of Texas and Backwoods. Welcome to the Daytripper family.
We are excited about our partnership with these great sponsors and we encourage our fans and viewers to check them out! As we posted last week, Season 6 is right around the corner…as in THIS week. So get ready to tune in to your local PBS station and experience new adventures across this great state of Texas!
See y’all out on the road!
Trippin’ SA Bus Tour
We had a great time last weekend trippin’ with a group of fans to San Antonio! Hanging with Daytrippers is a great way to spend a Saturday! We headed out with full stomachs thanks to Rudy’s Country Store and Bar-B-Q. This trip had a mix of stops from our San Antonio episode and a few other locations as well.
We started out visiting Mission San Jose and Mission Conception with a guided tour from Park Ranger extraordinaire, Tatum Weeks. There’s a lot of history to learn about the Missions. Next stop lunch…seriously…a Daytripper Bus Tour wouldn’t be legit without plenty of food and the folks over at El Mirador did not disappoint. Classic Tex-Mex and margaritas hit the spot. They recently got a nod from Texas Monthly in the article, “Southtown and Down.”
After a morning outside and a heavy meal, the group was ready for some time inside and what better way to learn more about this great state than a stop at the Institute of Texas Cultures. Not only is this part of UTSA but it is associated with the Smithsonian Institute as well. A few of us wandered over to La Villita for some shopping and watched Chet try to lasso a few Daytrippers. Last stop of the day was Beethoven Maennerchor where we enjoyed some German beer, great German food and learned a few new German drinking songs. Fun way to end the day in San Antonio.
But there was one more surprise on the way home, these Trippers got a sneak peek of Season 6 by watching the first episode of the new season premiering in October. We are excited about this new season and there are some cool episodes and adventures in store.
We had a great day in San Antonio and look forward to more Daytripper bus trips in the future. In fact, mark your calendars for October 4. We will be doing a North Texas Wine Tour trip out of Grapevine. Seats go on sale on Monday!!
Until then, have a great weekend, hit the road for a Daytrip before school starts on Monday and “Vaya Con Dios!”
An Intern’s First Taste of Cuvee
Howdy Daytrippers! Let me first introduce myself…I am the summer intern, Linsey. As a fellow Daytripper fan, it’s been fantastic to spend my days following Chet on his crazy adventures. I’m having a blast!
A week into my internship, Chet found out I claimed to be a coffee-addict but hadn’t yet tried Cuvee Coffee. Shocked and appalled, he immediately sent me to the Galaxy Bakery down the street to buy a cup.
If you’ve seen the Spicewood episode of The Daytripper, then you saw Chet take a tour of the Cuvee Coffee factory. If not – check this out.
Cuvee Coffee is one of America’s top specialty roasters, and they’re based right here in the Hill Country. They roast their coffee meticulously, using formulas and coffee-labs to ensure the taste is just right.
While Cuvee gets their beans from countries all around the world, including Brazil and El Salvador, I chose the Spicewood 71 Classic for my first cup. Usually, I need to load my coffee with tons of cream and sugar, but with Cuvee I didn’t. The taste was sweet and smooth, and not too strong, which I loved.
And since I enjoyed my first cup so much (and since Chet was paying, of course!) I just had to try the Cuvee Meritage Espresso. I’d never had a cup of espresso before and was expecting to be bombarded with bitter coffee grounds and overbearing tastes, yet Cuvee was just the opposite. It tasted fresh and sweet, with just the right of amount of kick to get me through the rest of my day. After all, coffee is an intern’s best friend!
So, fellow coffee lovers, grab yourself a cup of Cuvee, and raise a steaming mug to Texas family values and world-class taste! I’m now a faithful drinker.
If you’ve never had it (or need to restock), Cuvee Coffee is now available via The Daytripper General Store where Chet is compiling some of his favorite Texas-based shirts, food, and cool stuff. Order some today. You won’t regret it.
More Than a Day Trip: The Highland Lakes
If you’ve been watching The Daytripper, then you know one of our biggest supporters is The Highland Lakes of Burnet County. They are the official tourism representative for all there is to do in Burnet County and all the really awesome cabins, hotels, and vacation homes that lie in the hills of Burnet County.
With summer coming up and warmer weather just around the corner, it’s time to start planning your next vacation! So, I thought it would be cool to share some info and pictures from these absolutely incredible properties. Eventually, I’m going to try and stay at all of them, one at a time…
