Water Like Glass

A couple weeks back I was in College Station and my brother-in-law and I went out to Lake Bryan to snap some photos as the sun went down. Sunsets anywhere in Texas can be pretty exquisite, but this one was spectacular. And everything on the lake paused just to take it in….even the water.

Lake Bryan

Never in my life have I seen water this still, and I’m not sure I ever will again. I’ve woken up at the crack of dawn to go water skiing, and I’ve been on lakes in the dead of night, but it’s never been like this. There was not a hint of breeze in the air and not a single ripple on the entire lake. At first our attention focused on the setting sun and the colors that it cast across the sky. However, it wasn’t long before we noticed that the reflection in the water was just a clear as the sunset in the sky. We hadn’t realized it at first, but at that moment Lake Bryan was frozen. Or at least it looked that way.

Every puff of cloud and every faint hue of color was perfectly reflected in the water. If you turned your head sideways, it was impossible to tell which was real. It was pretty special. My wife would have been much more fun to embrace in the setting sun than my brother-in-law was. But Oh Well, nothing on earth is completely perfect, but this was pretty darn close. I just wanted to share. You can click on the pictures to make them bigger.

Hoo-wee Chicken Fried Bacon

I would love to have been in the room when the Sodolaks dreamed up the notion of chicken frying bacon. After all, anyone can fry bacon, but it takes a visionary to chicken-fry Bacon.

The chicken-fried bacon at Sodolak’s Country Inn in Snook, TX is the stuff Texas Legends are made of. And what’s even more shocking than the idea of “Chicken Fried Bacon”, is that its actually good.

Snook, Texas is a small community about 15 miles southwest of College Station. The exterior at Sodolak’s Country Inn is nothing fancy (neither is the interior for that matter).

And if you had any question as to what kind of food Sodolak’s serves, they’ve made it blaringly obvious. Sodolaks is a “STEAK HOUSE”. (no need for subtlety in Snook). But the day I visited I wasn’t on a mission for steak, but for bacon.

The Chicken Fried Bacon is an appetizer consisting of a half dozen or so thinly sliced strips of bacon, battered in Sodolak’s bacon batter, and then deep fried to a golden brown. And as with anything that’s “chicken-fried”, it came with a dipping portion of cream gravy. And there you go…

I expected greasy, fatty bacon, covered in oozing batter dripping with grease. Something like frying fat in more fat and then dipping it into a vat of fat. I told my wife to get the defibrillator ready. Let’s be honest, that’s what you would expect too. However, I was wrong. The chicken fried bacon is surprisingly crisp. I won’t call it “light” but it’s not heavy. The bacon is sliced so thin that it seems like it’s only there to help the batter hold its shape and to give the crunchy batter a nice hint of bacon flavor. The cream gravy only made it tastier.

Salad at Sodolak's Country Inn in Snook, TX

With the help of my wife, 2 year old son, and Aggie sister and brother-in-law we polished off the plate in no time, and then readied our stomachs for lunch. Ironically, I think the salad put me closer to the grave than the bacon. There’s a salad somewhere under that dressing, I promise.

Misplaced in College Station

So, I’m a Longhorn, and a Baylor Bear.  However, I can’t help but be really excited about the Aggies in the Cotton Bowl against LSU.  Now, I’m not gonna go as far as to yell out a “Gig Em” or heaven help me – a “Whoop”.  (that is a thumbs up in the picture if you were wondering – not a gig em). But I’m still pumped about it.  This is my way of coping with the Longhorns complete lack of a bowl game (and complete lack of an offense this year).

So in honor of the Aggie game.  I present to you, my day trip to Bryan-College Station.  The episode will come out this Spring, but I thought I would share my Daytripper Destinations with you guys in honor of the big game tonight.  Check it out.
