Texan Cafe & Pie Shop
The Texan has been on Main Street since 1966, and like the hippo in the story, it planted itself here and never moved. Jenny and Warren Smith were customers for more than ten years before they bought the place, which tells you most of what you need to know about how much they changed. There is a cow mounted above the door, and you owe that cow a chicken fried steak: tender in the middle, crisp on the outside, gravy, salt, black pepper, mashed potatoes alongside. Then there is the pie. More than fifty kinds, made the long way, with the coconut toasted in house. Coconut cream outsells everything else at least two to one. Start with a slice before lunch. Nobody here will judge you.

Jimmy and Brandi Calhoun started home brewing in 2014 and served it at their own wedding, which is a hard secret to keep. Now they sit on the highest bluff in town with what is fairly called the best view in Hutto. The flagship is Tangerine King, a dialed back hefeweizen that drinks like a porch pounder, and they have the porch to do it on. The Second Amber runs the other direction, dark and chocolatey and malty. The whole place leans rockabilly, down to live music and the occasional tattoo artist handing out free ink, and BBQ Fiends parks out front slinging barbecue. They brought a little South Austin north with them and left the traffic behind.
Chopsticks
Hutto’s herd is more diverse than the hippo signs let on, and dinner is where you taste it. Chopsticks started as a food truck, built a following fast, and moved into a brick and mortar. The kitchen borrows from Vietnamese, Korean, Thai, Taiwanese and Indian cooking and refuses to sit in any one lane. The beef and mango sets Sichuan heat against cold sweet mango and tangy carrot. The pulled pork rib bao is the one to order: the rib goes tender enough to give up the bone, wrapped up in a sweet hoisin bun. Ask for mild, then brace yourself anyway.

Henrietta the Hippo & Historic Downtown
Start where the town’s whole identity begins. As the story goes, a circus train stopped here in 1915, a hippo slipped out of its car and planted itself in Cottonwood Creek, and the depot agent fired off a telegram that has outlived everyone involved: stop trains, hippo loose in Hutto. The circus eventually got the animal back aboard and left town. The name stayed. Today Henrietta the Hippo holds down downtown, decorated for whatever season it happens to be, and she has thousands of concrete cousins scattered across yards and storefronts. You will not make it a block here without tripping over somebody’s hippo pride.

Best Clucking Place Farms
What started as a wish for a few backyard chickens turned into a working farm that draws visitors from around the country. The stars are the KuneKune pigs, a New Zealand breed known for a quiet temperament, which is how you end up sitting in the middle of a pile of them perfectly unbothered. Michelle will hand you a piglet, and you will not want to hand it back. The resident heavyweight is a three hundred pound boar called the Rock, who sits on command and has better manners than most people. Litters only come along a few times a year, so call ahead if cuddling a piglet is the entire point of your trip.
Thornhill Racing Circuit
This is not the radio control car you had as a kid. Thornhill is the largest dirt track of its kind in the country, the buggies out here get up around forty miles an hour, and the regulars are not messing around. There is a full pro shop on site, the cars turn into adult Lego projects the moment you get serious about it, and races run on Saturdays with open practice through the week. Walk up, watch a heat, and see how long you last before you want a controller in your hands. Fair warning: it is much harder than it looks from the rail.
