Denison, TX

Food

Cafe Blackbird

The family behind Blackbird opened it because they wanted a good sandwich, and everything is made from scratch daily — the bread, the dressings, the pies, the cakes. Many recipes come from relatives and church-lady cookbooks. Start with the pimento cheese, then get the Greek on fresh-baked bread.

Ironroot Republic Distilling

Two brothers fell for distilling, trained under a tenth-generation cognac distiller in France, then came home to do it in Denison — which makes more sense once you know the town’s grape history. They turn out brandy and bourbon, one of them named best whiskey in the world in 2020. Ask to see the pot still.

Food

Huck's Catfish

Mississippi Delta-style catfish, brought to Texas in 1994 and before long the must-stop catfish of Texoma. The style is the whole point: light, flaky breading instead of a heavy cornmeal crust, which comes down to very cold fish, soft breading and very hot oil. Do not skip the green tomato relish.

Culture

Vinita House

A museum to one of the best Texas stories almost nobody knows. The horticulturist who lived here declared he had found his grape paradise, and when phylloxera began destroying thousands of acres of French vines, France wrote asking for help. Texan rootstock saved the French wine industry.

Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site

Dwight D. Eisenhower was born in this house on the evening of October 14th, 1890. There was no hospital in Denison then, so neighbor women delivered him. Stand in that bedroom and look out the window: the railroad tracks are thirty feet away, and the house rattled every time a locomotive passed.

Outdoors

Eisenhower State Park

Out on the banks of Lake Texoma, with most of the shoreline sitting up on a limestone bluff. Stand at Lovers Leap and you are looking straight at Oklahoma. Swim, fish, boat, hike and hunt fossils — keep your eyes down and you will turn up ammonites. The swim beach sits in a protected cove.

Eisenhower Veterans Monument

A sixteen-foot bust of Eisenhower keeping watch over a plaza of bricks, each one laid for a veteran. The head started out in a collection of giant presidential busts and came to Denison in 2011, which feels about right for the town that can claim his birth certificate. Take a minute and read the bricks.

The Daytripper Community

When we started Day Trippin’ Texas back in 2007, it was just four people and some gear crammed in a car with nothing but the open road and a dream in front of us.

It’s hard to believe that we’ve grown into a nationwide, Emmy-award-winning television show with some of the best fans and viewers in the world. It seems folks love Texas as much as we do, and it’s a privilege sharing it with y’all.
